OUR VISION FOR THE CITY
I am dedicated to serving our community and making it a better place for all. With years of experience in public service, I am committed to creating opportunities, ensuring public safety, and getting our city back on track. Most importantly, I have the experience to do the job on day one and I will not have to hire extra people to fulfill the duties of the Mayor. The City of Covington doesn't have the time for on-the-job training and there are issues that we are past due in addressing. Together, we can build a city that thrives on collaboration, innovation, and respect for every resident.
KEY ISSUES WE WILL ADDRESS
Job Growth
We need to make sure that everyone that wants to work can find a decent paying job in Covington. We have great factories here now, but there are more people that need work and many of our people have to drive to Memphis to find employment that will sustain them. Bringing more jobs to Covington will lower our unemployment rate and raise our median income.
Housing
Affordable housing is a right, not a privilege. I will advocate for policies that support the development of affordable housing and preservation of the homes in town. Everyone deserves a safe and stable place to call home.
Public Safety
I have a proven track record when it comes to supporting our police and fire departments. I have stood by our fire fighters when they were under attack and I will continue to support them because they, as well as our police officers, protect the lives of our citizens. I will work to grow the infrastructure for both departments so that the safety of our citizens increases. It is my goal to ensure that our citizens feel safe sitting on their porch no matter what neighborhood that they stay in.
Growth
I have already stated about the need for business growth in our community, but we also need to bring more families to Covington to insure the controlled growth of our community. Atoka, Brighton and Munford are outpacing us in housing and revenue growth. We need growth, but we need CONTROLLED growth. When we bring subdivisions to town, we need to ensure that these subdivisions improve the neighborhoods that they are in or at least keep things the same. I am not obligated to any real estate developers and I don't stand to make a profit off of the demise of our citizens and neighborhoods. It's all about treating others like we want to be treated.
Business Recruitment
Bringing new business to town is a way to help to bring more sales tax dollars to our budget as well as making sure that our citizens don't have to leave town to purchase what they need. 12,000 cars travel highway 51 every day. We need to do all that we can to make them stop and shop in Covington. This means more jobs and more money to help to ensure better public safety, roads and services for our citizens.
Flooding
Where do I start? For the past years, I have been fighting to mitigate our flood issues. There have been many excuses that have come from those in power. One was that it was just raining a lot. Another was that the city was not responsible for our drainage ditches. I am confident that we can do a better job to make sure that areas aren't flooded every time that we get a good rain. Millington got 14 million dollars in FEMA funding to help their flooding issues and I have asked before and am asking again for the city to apply for a grant. The grant will not cost the taxpayers anything and it will help to save money on flood insurance, help to raise property values, help to increase business in these areas, help to save our citizens from property damage as well as insuring the safety of our citizens. It's a win, win, win,win, win, win!
